East Carolina University, or more commonly and officially now known as ECU, is located in the heart of Greenville, NC. The town of Greenville and the college are intimately linked together to provide a vibrancy to the education experience and elevates residents experience of living in the town. This college town has a very active student body and alumni that participate at sporting and other events.
The enrollment at the school is almost 29k students; while the population of Greenville is over 89k. It is a public, doctoral/research university. The student to faculty ratio is 18:1 and the school boasts over 400 student organizations to engage students both inside and outside the classroom. ECU is the third largest and faster growing university in the state.
The breath of subject and degree programs is huge. There are several colleges within the University; Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, College of Allied Health Sciences, College of Business, college of Education, College of Engineering and Technology, College of Fine Arts & Communication, College of Health and Human Performance, College of Nursing, Honors College, School of Dental Medicine, Brody School of Medicine. In addition, the graduate school offers more than 70 master degree programs, 2 intermediate programs and 60 graduate certificate programs in the 11 colleges and schools.
The Brody School of Medicine is considered a top producer of primary-care physicians for the US. In fact, The East Carolina Heart Institute is led by the world-renowned surgeon Dr. Randolph W. Chitwood Jr. People from all over the country and the world travel to this cutting-edge care and research facility for treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Here, under one roof, one can be in the hands and under the care of top-notch medical professionals.
There is also a School of Dental Medicine on campus. Students are trained here with community service-learning centers. These centers help patients who lack regular access to dental care.
ECU was founded on March 8, 1907 as a teacher training school. It has grown from a campus of 43 acres to over 1,600 acres today.
The “Pirate Club” is the fund raising arm of the University’s Athletics program. It funds capital improvements and the scholarship programs and has multiple chapters in NC, SC, VA, GA and Washington DC. The club has over 15,000 active members. It’s no surprise that this dedicated contingency supports the team at events and home games.
One student sums it up perfectly, “On game days it feels as if the entire town, alumni, and student body all come together and everyone has a great time creating the PIRATE NATION!” Another student describes it as “Pirate Pride,” which springs from a deep appreciation for the “beautiful campus, friendly people, school spirit, great sports teams, beautiful weather” that are present at ECU. “We love our sports and purple and gold,” another way of saying “ECU football and basketball games are huge.”
